THOMAS EVANDER VAUSE was born 22 March 1846 in South Carolina, the fourth of ten children born to Ephraim Vause and his wife Margaret Maria Revell Vause. In December 1854, the Vause family along with many other families from the Darlington area traveled by wagon to Wakulla County, Florida. The family settled about halfway between Sopchoppy and Smith Creek on land that came to be known as Vause Branch.
The War Between the States began and Tom’s three older brothers went off to fight for Southern independence. On 1 June 1864, Tom enlisted at Madison, Florida in Company K, 7th Regiment, Florida Infantry. His 1904 Application for Pension says he was captured after the fight at Nashville, Tennessee and paroled after the war.
Tom returned home and in 1866 married Frances “Fannie” Elizabeth Langston who was born 25 May 1851 in Darlington, South Carolina, the daughter of Jesse Langston and his wife Mary Mariah Smith Langston. Tom and Fannie had nine children. Tom was a farmer and eventually moved his family to the community of Arran, a railroad town in Wakulla County. Frances died 2 July 1924 in Arran. Tom died 9 May 1927 in Arran. They are buried in Arran Cemetery, Wakulla County, Florida.
