From "Slavery in the South" by Martha Norris McLeod
“Let me give you some facts:
Slavery in the South was not a principle in the South.
Slavery was introduced into the country in Colonial times by the political authorities of Great Britain, Spain, France, and the Dutch merchants.
The first slave ship was launched at Marble Head, Mass. In 1836. (The people from the South never ever had a slave ship.) The New England states found it was unprofitable to own slaves as the cold climate in the North was unsuitable to the negro. For that reason they sold their slaves to the states in the South. the Southern colonies viewed with alarm the flowing tide of negroes in their midst. Strong protest(s) were made. Laws were enacted to restrict their importation. Georgia was the first to protest the importation of negroes. Then Virginia and South Carolina. Virginia passed laws against the importation of slaves 32 times!
Thomas Jefferson in historical draft of the Declaration of Independence protested against the slave trade.
General Lee freed his slaves before the War began.
While the northern General Ulysses S. Grant continued his slaves in bondage until after the War.
The North imported the slaves, sold them to the South, and later organized a party to oppose slavery called the Abolition Party. But they had no intention of repaying the South for the slaves they had sold to them. In that day slaves were sold and therefore considered as a “bought property, or ownership.” the South had brought these slaves from the North and felt that they should be repaid for them. The North was persuading many of them [the slaves] to run away.
The real cause of the War Between the States was States Rights. The Constitution of the United States provided for an Union of independent and self-governing States. The South believed in States Rights, that each state should regulate its own affairs according to its best interest; and with no meddling of management from other states. The south fought to repel invasion of self-government. Just as the Fathers of the American Revolution. The disregard of those powers for the rights of the Southern States is what led to the War Between the States. A citizens first duty was to his state.
When England emancipated her slaves in 1843, Parliament paid Two billion dollars to the owners.
The United Daughters of the Confederacy was founded in Nashville, Tennessee in the year 1894 by Carolyn Meriwether Goodlett and Anna Mitchell Davenport Raines. It was formed to preserve the TRUTH regarding the South.
We, You and I, are the standard bearers of today. Let us EACH do our best in passing this BANNER to the coming generations.”
