JOHN ENGRAM VAUSE was born on 26 August 1842 in South Carolina, the second of ten children born to Ephraim Vause and his wife Margaret Maria Revell Vause.  The Vause family moved from Darlington County, South Carolina to Wakulla County, Florida in December 1854.                            

On 17 May 1861, John enlisted at Newport, Wakulla County, Florida in Company D, 3rd Regiment, Florida Infantry.  On 3 July 1864 he was captured near Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia and held prisoner until being paroled at the end of the war.  After the war, he signed up with the 5th United States Volunteer Infantry assigned to Mexico as a wagon guard to keep the Indians from attacking the supply trains.

On 17 July 1866 in Leon County, Florida, John married Penelope Jane Baker who was born in 1847 in South Carolina, the daughter of William H. and Elizabeth E. Baker.  John and Penelope had five children.  John died in Leon County, Florida on 25 December 1910.  Penelope died in 1913.  Both are buried in Arran Cemetery, Wakulla County, Florida.
